چکیده

The cell impedance analysis technique is a label-free, non-invasive method, which simplifies sample preparation and allows applications requiring unmodified cell retrieval. However, traditional impedance measurement methods suffer from various problems (speed, bandwidth, accuracy) for extracting the cellular impedance information. This thesis proposes an improved system for extracting precise cellular impedance in real-time, with a wide bandwidth and satisfactory accuracy. The system hardware consists of five main parts: a microelectrode array (MEA), a stimulation circuit, a sensing circuit, a multi-function card and a computer. The development of system hardware is explored. Accordingly, a novel bioimpedance measurement method coined digital auto balancing bridge method, which is improved from the traditional analogue auto balancing bridge circuitry, is realized for real-time cellular impedance measurement. Two different digital bridge balancing algorithms are proposed and realized, which are based on least mean squares (LMS) algorithm and fast block LMS (FBLMS) algorithm for singleand multi-frequency measurements respectively. Details on their implementation in FPGA are discussed. The test results prove that the LMS-based algorithm is suitable for accelerating the measurement speed in single-frequency situation, whilst the FBLMS-based algorithm has advantages in stable convergence in multi-frequency applications. A novel algorithm, called the All Phase Fast Fourier Transform (APFFT), is applied for post-processing of bioimpedance measurement results. Compared with

Distance protection closed-loop testing using RTDS

This paper presents a distance protection test procedure by applying the Real-Time Digital Simulator (RTDS) of a power system. RTDS is a tool to design, develop, and test power-system protection. The RTDS enables real-time computation of electromagnetic phenomena with a calculation time step of even 50μs. The hardware allows the import and export of many signals from the simulator to an ext...

Nyquist Plots Prediction Using Neural Networks in Corrosion Inhibition of Steel by Schiff Base

The corrosion inhibition effect of N,N′-bis(n-Hydroxybenzaldehyde)-1,3-Propandiimine on mild steel has been investigated in 1 M HCl using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. A predictive model was presented for Nyquist plots using an artificial neural network. The proposed model predicted the imaginary impedance based on the real part of the impedance as a function of time. The model to...

Improved Cellular Analysis for the Early Detection of Compound-Induced Hepatic Cytotoxicity to Reduce Animal Testing

Most conventional cell-based in vitro assays for the assessment of cell viability and cytotoxicity are disruptive endpoint assays requiring cell lysis. A non-invasive and label-free way to continuously monitor cellular behavior can now be achieved using the xCELLigence System of Real-Time Cell Analyzers (RTCA) co-developed by Roche and ACEA Biosciences (2). xCELLigence RTCA SP, MP and DP Instru...

DC Impedance-Model-Based Resonance Analysis of a VSC-HVDC System

Resonances can have negative impact on a Voltage Source Converter-High Voltage DC (VSC-HVDC) system. This paper develops dc impedance models for the rectifier and inverter stations for a VSC-HVDC system when they are viewed from a dc terminal. The impedance models take converter controllers into account. The derived impedance models are validated by comparing frequency responses of the analytic...
